In August 2017, District 1 City Commissioner Carl Shechter publicly announced that he would be retiring from his position on the City Commission effective September 30, 2017. His retirement created a vacancy in the District 1 seat on the City Commission on October 1, 2017.
The City’s Charter required that the City Commission adopt a resolution that set forth the process of appointing a person to fill the vacancy. Since, as of the effective date of his retirement, there was less than 180 days remaining on the Commissioner’s term, the City Commission could legally appoint a qualified individual to serve the remaining balance of Shechter’s term of office.
The City Commission passed a motion to appoint Ismael Monroig, Jr. to fill the vacancy created by the retirement. On October 1, 2017, Ismael Monroig began serving as the Interim City Commissioner for District 1.
Commissioner Monroig, Jr. has sat on numerous boards for the City of Pembroke Pines including the City of Pembroke Pines Planning & Zoning Board, the Economic Development Board, the Board of Adjustment and the Charter Review Advisory Board. He was also Chairman of the Miramar Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce.
He currently is the Regional Director of Encore Event Technologies, a provider of in-house audiovisual services for hotels, conference centers and resorts throughout North America.
