PEMBROKE PINES PARAMEDICS WON THE 2009 BROWARD INVITATIONAL

Paramedics from the Pembroke Pines Fire Department won first place honors in the annual Chief Michael Haygood Advanced Life Support Competition at this year’s 2009 Broward Invitational. This is the second time they placed first in three years. Captain Marcel Rodriguez, Lieutenant Scott Gunn, Lieutenant Moises Martinez and Paramedic Rolando Hernandez made up this year’s winning team.

Ten teams from local Fire Departments competed this year including one team from Palm Beach County (Boca Raton). The event was held at George English Park in Fort Lauderdale on May 19th. The fifteen minute mock scenario involved a personal watercraft accident with multiple patients. Competitors race against the clock to assess the condition of the patients, recognize their medical needs, and provide prompt appropriate treatment.

Also, a special award was available to the team who most accurately identifies and treats a particularly difficult patient with airway problems. It is named the “Smart Airway Award” and this year it went to the Pembroke Pines team. That particular patient was treated by Lieutenant Scott Gunn.

“This is a great achievement for our team, they take great pride in their efforts, whether it is in competition or in day to day situations,” said Rescue Division Chief Mike Vincent.

8 YEAR OLD BOY RECEIVES PHOENIX AWARD

While Jose Anton Jr. and his family were on vacation visiting from Ecuador, his three year old cousin Nicolas fell in the pool and sank to the bottom. Without hesitation Jose immediately jumped into the pool fully clothed and rescued his cousin. If it wasn’t for Jose’s courageous actions the outcome could have been deadly. In recognition for his heroic act the Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department awarded Jose Anton Jr. the Phoenix Award, the highest award the fire department gives to a civilian.

BROWARD COUNTY ANNOUNCES FIRE SAFETY INSPECTOR OF THE YEAR

On December 4, 2007 Prevention Captain William (Trae) Kemp III of the Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department was the proud recipient of the 2007 Richard Korte Fire Safety Inspector of the Year Award presented by the Fire Inspectors Association of Broward County. This award was given in recognition for Captain Kemp’s dedication to the professional development of the Fire Safety Inspectors and his commitment to improve the Life Safety of the residents of Broward County.

"We are very fortunate to have Inspector Kemp. He is the classic example of an employee who when called upon, has stepped up and is doing an incredible job. I am extremely proud of Trae and the entire Fire Prevention Division. They truly are the unsung heroes of the Fire Service," said Fire Chief John Picarello.
