The Fire Prevention Division encourages all our residents to stay prepared for home fires and know what to do. We've put together as many tips as possible here on this site, but there are always more brochures and educational videos available through our offices. If we can ever be of service, please don't hesitate to call on us.

Smoke Detectors

Replace batteries in smoke detectors at least once a year. And replace the entire unit after ten years of service, or as the manufacturer recommends. Also, remember that dust and dirt are bad for smoke detectors, clean them with a vacuum hose.

Fire Extinguishers

Learn how to use a Fire Extinguisher.

Use the PASS principle:

Pull the pin from the extinguisher.

Aim the nozzle of the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

Squeeze the extinguisher handle to release contents.

Sweep extinguisher from side to side while putting fire out.

Get Out Alive

Use the EDITH principle.

Practice with your family how to get out in the event of a fire. Feel the bedroom door, if it is hot look for a second way out. Crawl low to the ground where clean air is. Establish a meeting place outside. Call the Fire Department from a neighbor's home. Never go back into a burning house.
