The Pembroke Pines Police Department's goals and values revolve around its commitment to Community Policing. The Bicycle Unit has proven itself to be an effective community policing tool.

The unit was formed in 1994 and presently consists of three full-time officers. Bicycle officers utilize bicycles in their efforts to break down barriers of communication between the police and the public. This facilitates the solving of problems and builds mutual trust and respect.

Bicycle officers complete this time-consuming and difficult task by making as many positive contacts with the citizens and business owners of the City as possible. Once accomplished, bicycle officers can obtain valuable information which will lead to identifying and resolving community concerns.

The bicycle unit is also utilized in shopping areas to patrol the parking lots where their stealth approach is often not observed by the criminal element. The bicycle unit hosts numerous Bicycle Rodeos each year. They consist of a series of drills and obstacle course that deal with known causes of bicycle accidents.

These drills teach the children of the community proper bicycle safety skills. Helmets are made available for those in need to ensure that all children comply with the newly enacted helmet laws.
