The Community Affairs Unit helps to establish an interaction between the citizens of the community and the Police Department.

A partnership between the two helps to identify and target the problems within the community. We can accomplish this through a variety of events that are organized by police personnel, community volunteers, and the city's Citizen Crime Watch. Below is a list of some of our events:

Bicycle Safety Rodeos - Held at local elementary schools

National Night Out Against Crime - One location in the central part of the City; held annually showcasing what our agency has to offer the community

Police and Fire Open House - An annual event for the public to look inside their Police and Fire Departments to see how they operate

Citizens Police Academy - A fifteen-week hands-on academy for citizens to receive in-depth police procedures, which is a prerequisite to Community on Patrol

Community on Patrol - Armed with cellular telephones, our Community on Patrol are the additional eyes and ears of our agency.

Puppet Shows - A joint effort with Crime Watch, programs such as "Stranger Danger" and "Stop, Drop, and Roll" are provided to school children in the nursery and elementary age groups.

Personal Safety Presentations - Different topics are provided to groups, clubs, schools, organizations, and businesses.

Residential and Business Security Surveys - Information and an actual survey is provided on burglary prevention for your home, office, or business.

S.A.L.T. Program - Seniors and Law Enforcement Together is a specialized program tailored to the needs of our seniors.

The Community Affairs Unit is responsible for the Mobile Sub-Station / Command Post. This is a 34 foot motor home which was entirely paid for with confiscated drug money. The Command Post was specifically designed to be multi-purpose. During an emergency or disaster, the sub-station can be brought directly to a major scene to serve as a command post from which police, fire, and rescue personnel can be dispatched.

A second room contained within the sub-station can serve as a briefing room, conference room, or press room. Our employees can work on reports and take statements from witnesses from inside it.

The Community Affairs Unit can be contacted by calling 954-436-3274.
