Single-Stream Recycling

In response to numerous requests from our residents to switch to a single-stream method of recycling, effective February 1, 2010, single stream recycling will begin in Pembroke Pines. What single-stream recycling means is recyclable items no longer need to be sorted into separate bins. All recycled items may be placed together in your green or blue (city-issued) recycling bins. This simple and easy method of recycling increases the amount a household recycles on an average of 30 percent.

Acceptable Items

The following items may be placed together in your blue or green recycling bins:
  • Aluminum and metal food and beverage containers
  • Catalogs
  • Crushed boxes including tissue boxes and food boxes such as cereal, rice, and pasta
  • File folders
  • Glass food and beverage containers
  • Inserts
  • Junk mail
  • Magazines
  • Milk and juice cartons and drink boxes
  • Newspapers
  • Office paper
  • Phone books
  • Plastic bottles such as soda, milk, water detergent, and shampoo, (without caps or lids)
  • Small flattened cardboard boxes from non-food items
  • Soda cartons
  • Soft-covered books

Pretreatment of Recyclables

Before placing recyclables in bin:
  • Rinse containers
  • Remove newspapers from plastic delivery bag
  • Recycle plastic grocery bags at local supermarket - don’t place with recyclables
  • Remove caps, lids, and straws
  • Do not place household garbage or food waste in with recyclables
  • Do not include containers used for margarine, bleach, oil, grease, hazardous material, household cleaners, medical waste, or microwave containers
