Public Meeting on Redistricting

After each decennial US Census, the City must evaluate the Commission election districts to ensure they are as close to equal population as possible. Consistent with the City of Pembroke Pines Charter, the City has hired Florida Atlantic University (FAU) to conduct an analysis of the current election districts using apportionment data (Public Law 94-171) from the US Census Bureau to determine if the City needs to amend the districts due to changes in population. Based on data from the 2020 US Census, the City of Pembroke Pines has a total population of 171,178 people. Similar projects are also underway for Federal, State and County districts.

On Wednesday, October 6, 2021. FAU presented an analysis of the current election districts, as well as three map alternates for the purposes of redistricting to the City Commission. Following this, the City will hold a Public Meeting regarding redistricting to garner public participation on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at 7 pm in the City Commission Chambers located at 601 City Center Way. Interested residents are encouraged to attend the meeting for an understanding of the municipal redistricting process and conceptual map alternatives. In January 2022, a workshop meeting will be held in conjunction with a City Commission meeting prior to first reading of the ordinance to allow additional public participation. The City anticipates adoption of a map by ordinance in February 2022.  The FAU report and map alternatives can be found on this website under Resident Resources (Redistricting) along with an excerpt of the City Charter pertaining to the composition of districts and redistricting.
