Opening Reception of Newest Exhibition
Pembroke Pines, FL (December 17, 2025) – The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery invites all ages to a free opening reception for its newest exhibition Me pongo el sol al hombro y el mundo es amarillo (I put the sun on my shoulder and the world turns yellow) by Edison Peñafiel on Thursday, January 29, 2026 from 6-9 PM at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery, located at 601 City Center Way.
Exhibit Details
Me pongo el sol al hombro y el mundo es amarillo (I put the sun on my shoulder and the world turns yellow) is a deeply evocative installation by Edison Peñafiel that reflects on how migration and movement shape the ways we perceive, remember, and orient ourselves in the world. Composed of seven monumental curtains suspended in space, the work unfolds as a kinetic narrative that viewers must physically navigate, echoing the shifting perspectives that accompany journeys across geographies, cultures, and states of belonging. Curated by Sophie Bonet, this new exhibition will run January 29 through April 11, 2026.
Artist Bio
Since moving to the United States from Ecuador in 2002, Peñafiel has built a body of work that reflects on migration, power and the cycles of history that shape human experience. His installations, combining video, sculpture and sound, draw from German Expressionism, inviting viewers to question what is real and what is constructed. Peñafiel’s works have been shown at the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum (MARE MAGNVM: A Floridian Odyssey, 2024), the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Coral Springs Museum of Art, Sabrina Amrani Gallery, and at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo 2 de Mayo (CA2M), both in Madrid.
He has been recognized with major awards, including the VIA Art Fund Production Grant (2024), the Knight Foundation Award and Florida Prize in Contemporary Art (2019), the Ellies Creator Award (2021), and the Premio ARCO Comunidad de Madrid (2022). His works are held in the collections of Oolite Arts, Elsewhere Museum, and CA2M.
