Pembroke Pines, FL… February 23, 2017… Three Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School-Central Campus students were awarded First Place at the 2017 Annual Broward County Regional Science and Engineering Fair (BCSEF) held at the Westfield Broward Mall. The BCRSEF is an annual pre-collegiate science competition which provides a forum to showcase outstanding student projects, over 800 this year, from public, charter, and private schools across Broward County.

In March, the PPCMS-Central Campus First Place students will compete at the 62nd State Science and Engineering Fair in Lakeland, Florida.  Logan Saenz (8^th grade) took First Place in the Mathematics category, Gabriel Diaz (7^th grade) and Natalie Gonzalez (8^th Grade) took First Place in the Physics and Astronomy. Sixth grade student Jovan Alfonzo received Third Place in Engineering.

At the beginning of the school year, Central Campus Science Teacher Piper Spencer challenged her middle school students (sixth through eighth grade) to ask a question to which they did not know the answer. The question had to be measureable through research and observation over the course of three months.  After students determined their question, they researched, wrote a hypothesis, tested, observed, asked more questions, and retested with the ultimate goal of having their original question answered. Students summarized their conclusion and created display boards to illustrate their process and the project findings and outcomes.  On January 11, 2017 the top 50 Central Campus students competed against one another, and nine winning students went on to compete in the February Broward County Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

“We are so proud of our students! They have engaged in relevant and rigorous scientific research of a caliber not usually seen until the undergraduate level.  They are society’s future innovation leaders who will find solutions to the complex problems of our world,” concluded Spencer. 

Students winning First, Second and Special Awards will attend the Broward County Regional Science and Engineering Fair Awards Ceremony and Presentation on March 10, 2017 at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, 1770 Monroe Street, Hollywood, FL.
