2017 Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky
Pembroke Pines, FL… March 7, 2017….The 2016-2017 school year has been a grand slam for the Robotics Team from the Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School West Campus (PPCMS-West Campus). The Robotics Teams began competing and winning at the local level, eventually earning three coveted team slots at the 2017 Florida State Vex IQ Championship held in Tampa Florida.
In January, five West Campus teams participated in RoboSLAM Vex IQ Regional Qualifying competition at the Miami-Dade Fair and Expo Center, against 54 South Florida teams. The PPCMS-West Campus Steel Jags, Mecha-Knights, and Tech Titans advanced to the teamwork match finals, where they placed in the Top 15. The Tech Titans team also won the design award presented to the team with the most effective and efficient robot design process.
“In February, the Steel Jags and the Mecha-Knights competed in the last Vex IQ qualifier, where they hoped to earn at least one of the two available slots left at the state competition,” said Fermin Vasquez, M.Ed., 7th Grade Advanced Life Science/8th Grade Physical Science, Science Department Chair, PPCMS Robotics Club Co-Sponsor, Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School West Campus. The PPCMS Teams were victorious in the competition against nine other teams. The Mecha-Knights and the Steel Jags posted high scores in the skills challenges, with scores of 123 and 110 earning them 1st and 2nd place and a world ranking of 49th and 92nd, respectively. In the teamwork challenge, the Steel Jags took first place and the Mecha-Knights received the Excellence award. The Excellence award is presented to the team exemplifying overall excellence in creating a high quality Vex IQ robotics program and earned the Mecha-Knights a spot in the FL State Vex IQ Championship. The high score earned by the Steel Jags won them an invitation to the state competition as well.
“The Steel Jags, Tech Titans, and Mecha-Knights have worked extremely hard and I know their momentum will continue onto the State Competition. Hopefully, we will ride it all the way to the World Championships!" said Fermin Vasquez, M.Ed., 7th Grade Advanced Life Science/8th Grade Physical Science, Science Department Chair, PPCMS Robotics Club Co-Sponsor, Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School West Campus.
On February 18, 2017, the PPCMS-West Campus Steel Jags, Tech Titans, and Mecha-Knights teams traveled to Tampa, Florida to compete in the Florida State Vex IQ Championship. Sixty-one of the best Florida teams came together to compete in the daylong event. “All three of our teams competed fiercely in teamwork and individual skills challenges and once the dust settled, the Steel Jags and the Mecha-Knights finished 5th and 8th, respectively,” said Vasquez. “I am so proud, and beyond excited to officially announce our Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School – West Campus Steel Jags and the Mecha-Knights Teams have been invited to compete in the VEX Worlds 2017 Tournament this April 23-25 in Louisville, Kentucky,” concluded Fasquez.
