Community Invited Second Annual Mayor’s Chess Challenge and Season Finale in Pembroke Pines

Pembroke Pines, FL…April 27, 2017…. Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis invites people of all ages and skills interested in playing chess, to join him at the Mayor’s Second Annual Chess Challenge. The free event, supporting scholastic chess, will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Pembroke Lakes Golf Club Nineteen Restaurant, located at 10500 Taft Street in Pembroke Pines. Participants will have the opportunity to win raffle prizes, giveaways and enjoy light refreshments.
People of all ages and skills who share an interest in the game of chess will learn new strategies or freshen up existing skills. Participants may even end up playing with Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis and/or City Commissioners, Broward County officials, and community leaders who attend the traveling challenge. The Traveling Mayor’s Chess Challenge encourages continuous participation by providing instructors to assist players and issuing the players a “chess passport”.
“During the chess season players who traveled to neighboring communities to play in the Mayor’s Chess Challenges received a stamp in their passport,” said Tom Joyce, Youth League Supervisor and the organizer of the Mayor’s Annual Chess Challenge for the City of Pembroke Pines. “We are happy to be hosting the final game of the chess season right here in Pembroke Pines.” Event Sponsor: Power Financial

The Mayor’s Chess Challenge is a First Move event sponsored by the nonprofit America’s Foundation 4 Chess www.af4c.org . Internationally, America’s Foundation 4 Chess First Move program can be found in Scotland, England, Kenya, St Lucia, Antigua, Suriname and 26 States in the U.S. where approximately 140,000 students participate in the program.
