The Five R’s: Waste Reduction

What Are the Five R’s?

The City of Pembroke Pines encourages residents to follow the Five R’s to help minimize waste, conserve resources, and protect the environment.

These simple actions, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Rot, help every household and business contribute to the City’s sustainability goals.

Together, these actions promote a circular economy, where materials are reused and repurposed rather than discarded.

1️⃣ Refuse

Say no to unnecessary items that create waste.

  • Decline single-use plastics such as straws, utensils, and bags.
  • Avoid products with excessive or non-recyclable packaging.
  • Choose quality, durable products over disposable ones.

💡 Tip: Many local retailers now offer paper or reusable bag options, bring your own to help reduce waste at the source.

2️⃣ Reduce

Buy and consume less, especially items with short lifespans or heavy packaging.

  • Purchase items in bulk when possible.
  • Print documents only when necessary and opt for digital communication and billing.
  • Save energy and water by practicing efficient habits at home.

🟢 The City has significantly reduced paper use by introducing online billing for utilities and waste services, transitioning City Connect to a fully digital publication, and converting the formal procurement solicitation process from paper-based submissions to an online e-Procurement system.

3️⃣ Reuse

Use items again instead of throwing them away.

  • Donate clothing, furniture, or appliances that are still in good condition.
  • Participate in community yard sales, many Pembroke Pines HOA communities host them annually to encourage reuse.
  • Keep reusable shopping bags, bottles, and containers handy.

4️⃣ Repurpose

Get creative, turn “waste” into something useful!

  • Transform glass jars into storage containers or vases.
  • Repurpose wooden furniture or pallets for home projects.
  • Support local artists and businesses that upcycle materials.

💡 Repurposing saves money, supports creativity, and keeps items out of landfills.

5️⃣ Rot (Compost)

Turn organic waste into a valuable resource.

  • Compost kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, and yard waste to create nutrient-rich soil.
  • Explore small backyard composting or community compost programs.

🟢 The City continues to explore residential composting and food waste recycling programs as part of its Green Plan objectives.
