The City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department will be hosting a Caribbean-American Heritage Festival on Saturday, June 29, 2024, 6 pm-10 pm at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. This family-friendly event will feature live music, performances, and a showcase of food and goods. As part of the Festival, The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery will offer lectures, workshops, and arts and crafts for the entire family. Free activities at The Frank include: Saturday, June 29 from 5 pm to 8 pm the art of South Florida based artist Shawna Moulton will be featured and guests can participate in a drop-in self-led Button Making activity in The Frank’s lobby; from 6 pm to 7 pm, guests can learn more about the inspiration behind Moulton’s work and a brief history of Caribbean art in a discussion between Moulton and curator Tiera Ndlovu; and from 7 pm to 8 pm guests can learn about afro-futurism from artist Carol-Anne McFarlane before creating a personal afro-futurist-inspired vision board. Space is limited to 20 participants for this workshop and registration can be done at The Frank’s front desk during the Caribbean American Heritage Festival.
